Services Provided

MISSION STATEMENT
To provide comprehensive medical/forensic examinations and compassionate nursing care to children who have experienced, or for whom there is a concern of, acute sexual assault or abuse. We strive to reduce re-traumatization of each child during the examination process and support his/her biopsychosocial healing.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program is a division of the newly developing Forensic Nursing Department at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Nurses working in this Department are called Forensic Nurse Examiners (FNEs) in general, but more specifically SANE when related to sexual assault or abuse. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners provide comprehensive medical/forensic care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department who have an acute (within the prior 72 hours) history or concern of sexual assault or abuse. On-call coverage to the Emergency Department is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
